Welcome to Liverpool Parish Church. There has been Christian worship on this site since the 13th century and today we are still proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ in the centre of Liverpool.
All people are welcome in this place. At the Eucharist if you normally receive Holy Communion in your own church, you are welcome to do so here.
Babies and children are welcome in this church. If you feel they are unsettled, there is a small play area for them at the back of the north aisle. You would still be able to see, hear and participate in the service, but please rejoin the rest of the congregation when you are ready.
Sunday School Parents are welcome to stay with their children or to reclaim them at the end of the service.
Donations and Giving. We rely on generous individual giving for much of our income. If you are a UK taxpayer donations can be Gift Aided to provide additional benefit to the Church. If you worship here regularly then please consider joining the Planned Giving Scheme. There is also a contactless donation point in the Narthex.

Organ: Voluntary in D – William Boyce (1711-79)
The bell rings and we stand, as we are able, and sing:
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.
It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.
Dear name! the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding-place,
My never-failing treasury filled
With boundless stores of grace.
Jesus! my Shepherd, Brother, Friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
Accept the praise I bring.
Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see thee as thou art,
I’ll praise thee as I ought.
Till then I would thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And may the music of thy name
Refresh my soul in death.
Words: John Newton (1725-1807)
Music: ‘St Peter’ - Alexander Reinagle (1799-1877)
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.
We receive an absolution, assuring us of God’s forgiveness.
When Sunday School is meeting, a prayer is said with our young people at this point before they leave for their session.
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
(Music: Dom Gregory Murray (1905-92))
Gracious Father, by the obedience of Jesus you brought salvation to our wayward world: draw us into harmony with your will, that we may find all things restored in him, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

First Reading (Deuteronomy 30:9-14)
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
When I needed a neighbour Were you there, were you there?
When I needed a neighbour, were you there?
Refrain:
And the creed and the colour And the name won’t matter
Were you there?
I was hungry and thirsty Were you there, were you there?
I was hungry and thirsty, were you there? Refrain
I was cold, I was naked Were you there, were you there?
I was cold, I was naked, were you there? Refrain
When I needed a shelter Were you there, were you there?
When I needed a shelter were you there? Refrain
When I needed a healer Were you there, were you there?
When I needed a healer, were you there? Refrain
Wherever you travel I’ll be there, I’ll be there
Wherever you travel, I’ll be there
And the creed and the colour And the name won’t matter
I’ll be there.
Words and music: Sydney Carter (1915-2004)
Second reading (Colossians 1:1-14)
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
(We stand)
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
I am the light of the world, says the Lord. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Please turn to face the Gospel reading (Luke 10:25-37)
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Fr Steven Shakespeare
(We stand)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
(please kneel or sit)
Any of the following may be used:
Lord hear us Lord graciously hear us
Lord in your mercy hear our prayer.
At the end:
… One God, now and forever. Amen
… Merciful Father, accept these prayers, for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
(We stand)
The Peace is introduced, followed by:
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
Ye that know the Lord is gracious, ye for whom a Corner-stone
Stands, of God elect and precious, laid that ye may build thereon,
See that on that sure foundation ye a living temple raise,
Towers that may tell forth salvation, walls that may re-echo praise.
Living stones, by God appointed each to his allotted place,
Kings and priests, by God anointed, shall ye not declare his grace?
Ye, a royal generation, tell the tidings of your birth,
Tidings of a new creation to an old and weary earth.
Tell the praise of him who called you out of darkness into light,
Broke the fetters that enthralled you, gave you freedom, peace and sight:
Tell the tale of sins forgiven, strength renewed and hope restored,
Till the earth, in tune with heaven, praise and magnify the Lord.
Words: Cyril Aregentine Alington (1872-1955)
Music: ‘Hyfrydol’ Melody Rowland Huw Prichard (1811-87)
A prayer is said over the gifts on the altar, to which we respond Amen.
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
The seasonal part of the prayer follows and at the end we all sing:
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
(Addington Service – Richard Shephard (1949-2021))
We pray for the Holy Spirit to transform us and the gifts, and then the words of Jesus at the Last Supper are recalled:
The following acclamation is then used:
Praise to you, Lord Jesus:
Dying you destroyed our death,
rising you restored our life:
Lord Jesus, come in glory.
The prayer continues with oblation and intercession, ending:
…all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.
Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
We all sing:
Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world: give us your peace.
Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
If you normally receive Communion in your own church then you are welcome to do so here, or you may prefer the priest to pray for God’s blessing on you. There are two standing stations for Communion in the centre but if you would prefer to kneel to receive Communion then please use the rail in the south aisle on the congregation’s left side.
Please indicate if you would rather receive a blessing. Gluten-free hosts are available.
Hark, my soul, it is the Lord: ‘tis thy Saviour, hear his word;
Jesus speaks, and speaks to thee, ‘Say, poor sinner, lov’st thou me?
‘I delivered thee when bound, and, when wounded, healed thy wound;
Sought thee wandering, se thee right, turned thy darkness into light.
Can a woman’s tender cease towards the child she bare?
Yes, she my forgetful be, yet will I remember thee.
‘Mine is an unchanging love, higher than the heights above,
Deeper than the depths beneath, free and faithful, strong as death
Thou shalt see my glory soon, when the work of grace is done;
Partner of my throne shall be: say, poor sinner, lov’st thou me?’
Lord, it is my chief complaint that my love is weak and faint;
Yet I love thee, and adore, O for grace to love thee more!
Words: William Cowper (1731-1800)
Music: ‘St Bees John Bacchus Dykes (1823-76)
(We stand at ‘Let us pray’)
After the post-communion prayer we say together
You have opened to us the Scriptures, O Christ, and you have made yourself known in the breaking of the bread. Abide with us, we pray, that, blessed by your royal presence, we may walk with you all the days of our life, and at its end behold you in the glory of the eternal Trinity, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
Notices (please sit)
Please join us for refreshments after the service.
A collection is taken during the final hymn. Those preferring to donate online are invited to use the Donate button above, or our contactless donation point.
Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost, taught by thee, we covet most
Of thy gifts at Pentecost, holy, heavenly love.
Love is kind, and suffers long, love is meek, and thinks no wrong,
Love than death itself more strong, therefore give us love.
Prophecy will fade away, melting in the light of day;
Love will ever with us stay; therefore give us love.
Faith will vanish into sight; hope be emptied in delight;
Love in heaven will shine more bright; therefore give us love.
Faith and hope and love we see joining hand in hand agree;
But the greatest of the three, and the best, is love.
From the overshadowing of thy gold and silver wing
Shed on us, who to thee sing, holy, heavenly love.
Words: Christopher Wordsworth (1807-85)
Music: ‘Charity’ John Stainer (1840-1901)
(please stand)
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
…and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
